Krug Grande Cuvee NV 169 Edition
Krug Grande Cuvee NV 169 Edition
Krug is undoubtedly one of the world's most prestige and exclusive Champagne houses. Krug was founded in 1843 by the German Johann-Joseph Krug. His dream was to make the best champagne, which could be released every year regardless of the variations in the climate. A dream that has clearly come true today. At the Krug champagne house, they believe that one should not divide the house's champagne into hierarchies. This can be seen by Krug today, where the house offers seven different champagnes, all with their very own expression, but without being divided into specific hierarchies. Instead, it is the number of champagnes that are released that decides the pricing.
The domain was sold to the luxury group Louis Vuitton-Möet-Hennessy (LVMH) in 1999, but there is still a member of the Krug family who manages the champagne House – called Olivier Krug, who is the sixth generation of the Krug family. This ensures that the house's authenticity lives on and that Krug's Champagne is still made according to the principles of the founder Johann-Joseph Krug.
Krug is champagne with individuality and a great personality. As the current cellar master, Julie Cavil says it best "Our job is to reunite in one sip the most complete sensory experience that a Champagne can offer". Something that you have to say is that they succeed time and time again at Krug.
The champagne is always fermented in oak barrels, which gives the characteristic rich, full and nutty taste, and also adds some sweetness. This champagne can be kept for many years of aging, but can also be enjoyed today.
Comments from tasting:
"Oh, how happy you are when you stick your nose into a glass full of Krug Grande Cuvée! In the nose, from the first second, it offers fresh notes of lemon and green apples accompanied by hazelnut, smoke from the flint hitting each other, honey and nougat. In the mouth, a marked acidity shows itself immediately and hits the beat confidently, without the mouth clenching - the elegant play with the muscles. The acidity quickly gives way to the wine's seductive creaminess and dense concentration with all the oomph you hope for every time you open a bottle of Krug. The notes from the nose continue in the mouth, and after every sip you are left with a full flavor experience. The acidity is nicely integrated into the wine so that it doesn't dominate, which is how Grande Cuvée should be if you ask me. If you have the moderation to save some of the bottle for the next day, the notes of smoke and flint emerge even more the day after, and more Burgundian notes are added. Speaking of which, you can easily enjoy Edition 169 in a burgundy glass – it just unfolds the wine even more. The good thing about Krug Grande Cuvée is that it is a champagne that stimulates everyone, whether you are a novice or an expert in the bubbly universe of Champagne. That in itself is impressive. Krug has created another masterpiece, which here gets my highest recommendation."
