José Michel Chapitre Chardonnay
José Michel Chapitre Chardonnay
Extra brut, Assemblage 2020, Bottled June 2021, Disgorged October 2023
Chapitre Chardonnay is a precise, low-intervention blanc de blancs from José Michel, crafted entirely from Chardonnay grown in the clay-limestone soils of the southern Vallée de la Marne. The base wine comes from the 2020 harvest, vinified without fining (non collé) or filtration (non filtré).
Fermentation was split between oak barrels (57%) and stainless steel tanks (43%), combining richness and structure with purity and freshness. Bottled in June 2021 and disgorged in October 2023, the wine spent over two years on the lees. Dosage is 3.5 g/L.
This is a structured and expressive Chardonnay Champagne, with notes of citrus, white peach, and hazelnut, layered over chalky minerality and gentle wood influence. The oak is subtle, bringing texture and depth without overshadowing the precision of the fruit.
A serious and well-balanced grower Champagne, clear in identity, quietly complex, and made for both immediate enjoyment and further cellaring.
